Little Grebe Stare |
Little Grebes are some of the cutest birds you will ever encounter. And quick to disappear underwater whenever you point the camera at them. It's usually quite a challenge to capture one in the frame from any reasonable distance (them being small contributes - you need to be quite close to them to have any amount of details). The other day I had a good enough hide behind some bushes that I did manage to see some of them from pretty close by. This one was actually observing me taking a picture - I love the eye contact! If you look carefully you can also observe the water drops on her feathers - she just came out of the water a few seconds earlier.
What do I like about this photo? There are nice details - from the water droplets, to the reflection in the almost-still water. There's also eye contact, which adds a lot of interest, and the sun is in the back, which makes the Grebe outline light up.
What would I want to improve? The Grebe is a little underexposed, a bit too dark. This is always a challenge with bright sunlight coming from the back, but I probably should have exposed a bit brighter (pushing for more light in processing has its limits - at some point the details and the colors start to go away). Also, I would have loved to be even closer, for more details, and lower, to get a more personal angle. That was unfortunately not possible at the site...
