White Wagtail Reflection |
The Wagtails are very common this time of year, so are not usually considered coveted photograph targets. If you look closely, however, you can see that they're actually beautiful birds (even if the colors are somewhat dull - all in the range of white-grey-black), with charming personality. If you observe one near water (their preferred habitat) the joy is even bigger - they tend to hop around quite a bit. This photo shows this little beauty in all his glory with an almost perfect reflection in the blue water (with clouds above reflecting in the water as well).
What do I like about this photo? There's quite a good amount of detail - he was close enough for me to be able to take a picture that doesn't require a lot of cropping. The reflection is almost perfect. The color of the water (and the clouds reflecting there) provide for interesting background - a color contrast with the main subject, but subtle enough to not steal the focus. I used an open aperture (f/6.3 - the most my lens supports at this focal length) to blur out the background, and get a shallow depth of field.
What would I want to improve? A lower angle of view would have resulted in the bird standing out even more with respect to the background, and a potentially better reflection. The sun in the back would have caused the bird to "light up" a bit, making for a more interesting photo.
