Red-Backed Shrike |
The end of summer has numerous types of migratory birds coming through Israel. One of those is the Red-Backed Shrike. Here we have a female (the males have more extravagant colors), standing on a thorned branch. Shrikes catch insects and impale them on thorns, so from its perspective, this Shrike has found just the branch she likes!
What do I like about this photo? The composition is wonderful, with the curved, thorned branch and the beautiful Shrike on top. There's a good amount of detail here, and the beautiful back is showing in all its glory. The glimmer of light in the eye also adds some interest.
What would I like to improve? The background is boring - something green would have been much better. Better lighting (perhaps from the back) would also have made this photo more magical.
